Between Testimony and Parafiction

Artists working with archives negotiate a tension between fact and fiction to investigate cultural memory. Archives tell us not just what people did but also what they wanted to do, what they believed they were doing, and what they now think they did. This workshop will explore the moment where a lived experience becomes a record and what it means to shape the artifacts an individual leaves behind. Students will be tasked to develop one oral history project. We will draft consent forms, outlines, and look at different methodologies of approaching oral history. Technical skills developed from the class will be an introduction to audio recording using software like Audio Hijack and Hindenburg. We will experiment with different field recording devices and components such as lavalier and directional mics. In addition to these practical exercises, we will also read theory by prominent oral historians, such as Bolivian activist Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui and the Italian scholar Alessandro Portelli.
